Photographer Daniele Tamagni's new book celebrates these true kings of steez, The Gentlemen of Bacongo aka the Sapeurs (the Society for the Advancement of People of Elegance) 'Respected and admired in their communities, today's sapeurs see themselves as artists. Each one has his own repertoire of gestures that distinguishes him from the others.'

These images are taken from the legendary book Russian Criminal Tattoos, and can be seen life-size at Michael Hoppen Gallery till this Saturday. The archive was compiled by Sergei Vasilev and Danzig Baldaev's both Russian prison wardens who worked together to create this encyclopedic trilogy of tats over a 40 year period.

Dress up like a Pearly at the Museum of London this Saturday as part of the East Festival. But the Pearly steez was about more than just looking bling Victoriana style. Pearlies were the original charity fundraisers of the streets, with their origins in costermonger communities, their distinctive costumes are said to have sprung from the arrival of a large cargo of pearl-buttons from Japan in the 1860.
They became instant attraction and were approached by many hospitals and churches to help raise funds for the poor, deaf, dumb and blind.

Vintage Enders
Like it or not Eastenders has set the standards in this country as to what is socially except-able in our society, or not as the case has been with many a Walford fam. Just wait for the subversive credit crunch references that will surely reinforce the BBC's ideology and stance on such matters.
Wendy was at the centre of numerous morality tales, from relationship breakdown with Arthur, his subsequent death, Mark and his aids, Martin and his baby with Sonia as well as being a brilliant double act with Dot. I reckon loads of people have learnt how to live, deal with problems and feel better about their own lives by watching Wendy. She should be remembered as a true great in British Televison history for her amazing portrayal of Pauline Fowler in a show that has shaped our nation over the last 20 years as much as any single politician, program or event.
such a good character! RIP Wendy
Answer: Drag them out at the Brits with furry shoulders from the Killers and lady (dickhead) Gaga from Heat magazine and make them medley the shit out of their songs to the point that you fear that everything you ever liked is going to turn shit sooner or later.
The brits nearly eradicated part of my style sheet. This is why a week later i feel obliged to show them in a more credible light through picture, words and video.
Cities should be places made by the people that inhabit them. 'Storefront', a new photographic book by James and Karla Murray exemplifies this, taking us on a whistle stop tour through the very best of New Yorks Original Independent Stores, 'These stores have the city's history etched in their facades. They tirelessly serve their community, sustaining a neighborhood's diverse nature and ethnic background, in a city with an unmercifully fast pace and seemingly insatiable need for change.'

'We're all Gonna Die: 100 Meters of Existence' is the latest piece of work by Danish photographer Simon Hoegsberg, who spent 20 days was perched in the same spot in Berlin with his telephoto, snapping passers by. The results were edited into a 100 meter panorama of human expression. Simple but epic- gets my vote every day of the week.
These stills don't really do it justice, watch the slider here:

Often the best social documentary comes from within the community it springs from. So I've started a Flickr group with the aim of creating a 'peoples picture' of youth subcultures from the past 60 years. It's inspired by photographers like Gavin Watson and Jamel Shabazz who exemplify this theory.
Were you an orginal rude-boi or raver or was your mum a mod? Your dad a rockabilly? Or are you a young photographer snapping your scene today? If you are on Flickr, please add your pics to the group. If not join up!

Clash of the Titans (1981) Original Trailer
Charles was a film producer widely know for his long time collaborations with Ray Harryhausen the grand-daddy of stop motion special effects. Some big guns from their back catalogue include Jason and the Argonauts (1963), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974), and Clash of the Titans (1981) who's original trailer is above. I love the bit when Laurence Olivier say's "destroy Argos!"
Great guys are dropping like flies.

I wonder whatever became of 'Butterfly Boy'?
First Up in a new column paying homage to the Back 2 Life old masters is Social Documentary pioneer Jerome Leibling. The American photographer is probably most famous for his haunting 'Butterfly Boy' shot, who is almost a poster boy for Leiblings catalogue of work, which celebrates the strength and beauty in Everyday America over the past 50 years.
In a recent doc about his life he told reporter Mike Hazard.' Either there is always going to be pain, and if there is, it'd better be fairly distributed. There are no superiors. I think we're all about the same. But there certainly are advantages in life. And money. And who writes the history, and who says who's got it. And the rich control the history. I suppose I'm saying: these are valuable people.'
Still going strong at 84. Get to Know:
